Romanian banks have issued in the first half of this year a total of 1,917,977 cards, a number substantially lower than the same period last year, when were issued 2,912,372 cards, according to central bank statistics, analyzed by Bancherul.ro.
Number of valid cards in circulation dropped in the first six months of this year to 157,435 pieces, totaling 13,191,094 cards.
The total number of valid cards issued by Romanian banks is only 393,036 pieces smaller than the peak period at the end of 2008, when there were 13,584,130 cards. At the end of 2010 was recorded the lowest number of valid cards: 12,604,226.
In terms of active cards, commonly used by the owners, their number is 10813509 units in June 2012, with 42,467 more than at the end of last year.
Debit cards are the vast majority, 11,043,814 pieces, but 138,296 fewer than at the end of 2011.
Credit cards have reached 2,137,445 pieces at the end of June 2012, 18,841 fewer pieces than at the end of last year.
